Abstract

This study aims to analyze the thermal adaptation system in mosques within the Hidayatullah Islamic Boarding School complex in Bitung City by integrating microclimate conditions, environmental characteristics, and users’ adaptive behaviors. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, including measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity, as well as field observations and interviews with purposively selected users. The results showed air temperatures of 31.2–32.2°C, relative humidity of 79.3–81.7%, and air velocity of 0.1–0.3 m/s, indicating low thermal comfort. An evaluation using the PMV index indicated “warm” conditions, consistent with users’ perceptions of feeling hot while praying and studying. Adaptation strategies included the use of fans, moving to shaded areas, adjusting activity schedules, and utilizing natural ventilation. The findings indicate that thermal adaptation results from the interaction between the microclimate, the built environment, and user behavior, and led to the development of a thermal adaptation evaluation model that supports the development of sustainable passive design strategies.
