Abstract

This study aims to identify existing conditions, analyze the quality of public spaces for various community groups, and design equitable open-space models along road corridors in the city of Bitung, using the Sam Ratulangi Road Corridor and the Wolter Monginsidi Road Corridor as case studies. The study employs a mixed-methods approach with a parallel convergent design, combining physical audits and Likert-scale questionnaires administered to 100 respondents per corridor with interviews and participatory observation, all integrated through the joint display technique. The results indicate that both corridors do not yet meet the standards for ideal public open spaces, particularly regarding universal accessibility, the completeness of supporting facilities, and sidewalk connectivity. Public perceptions were relatively positive regarding the distributive and interactional dimensions (61–80%), but the procedural dimension was consistently the weakest, with only 40–44.1% of the public feeling involved in the planning process. The resulting model integrates facility standardization, tiered participation forums, and enhanced lighting and universal design as the basis for policy recommendations and the design of more inclusive and equitable street corridors.
